Reading

National Geographic Kids magazine is having a photo contest.  Parents are supposed to capture their kids reading.  Princess Sparkley wanted us to stage something.  I told her there was no need, we've been capturing her reading for almost ten years.  In no particular order...

And there's one more, of her in some awkward position on our floor reading a book.  I can't find it and it's driving me nuts.  It's from the past 6 months or so, and I've gone through all those picture files over and over again and I can't find it.  Ahhh!

Baseball Season!

I'm a little late on blogging about this, but I LOVE baseball season.  I forget how much I actually love it until Jed is watching a game online and I hear the sounds of baseball.  The organ.  The crack of the bat.  The announcers.  I can't wait until we get to go to a game this year.

Our family, 2002-2011 ball park pictures.  I'm pregnant with Princess Sparkley in the three 2002 pictures.  The stadia covered are: Dodger Stadium x2  (LA), Angels Stadium (Anaheim), Jack Murphy Stadium (San Diego), Kauffman Stadium x3 (Kansas City), Busch Stadium (St. Louis), Coors Field (Denver), Nationals Park (DC), Oriole Park (Baltimore), Great American Ball Park (Cincinnati), and Pfitzner Stadium (single A Nationals team).  I've also been to Fenway Park.  And that might be my entire list.  A lot, but not nearly enough. :)

Discovery Space Shutte Flies By

The Space Shuttle Discovery flew all over northern Virginia and Washington DC today getting ready to land and move into its new home at the Air and Space Museum at the Dulles airport.  From the blogs I read and the Facebook statuses I've seen, it literally seemed to fly directly over everyone.  We didn't want to drive far or deal with crowds, so I drove us over to an empty parking lot of with a good view of a lot of sky, and it flew directly over us too!  Yea!

Then we came home and watched the online news feed about it landing at Dulles while we drew pictures, etc.

Lovey

If you were around, reading my blog back when Little Guy was a newborn, you'll remember these pictures:

For Mystery Baby, I need to come up with what stuffed animal to take his picture with each week/month.  I'm torn between this frog and this monkey.  Care to vote?  I've added a poll to your right.  I'm also open to other suggestions although I really like this line of Ty Pluffies because they are machine washable.

The Greatest Sugar Cookie: Cookie 14

Recipe from here.  Frosting recipe from here.

We made these sugar cookies I found on Pinterest for our Easter dessert.  I liked how easy there were (no refrigeration required) and I LOVED the tangy flavor the cream cheese added to the cookies.  Yum!

As for the frosting, I had high expectations (loving everything else from Our Best Bites), then I read the recipe which is unlike any other frosting I've made.  It was good.  But a little weird.  Maybe I'm not a big fan of butter cream frosting in general.  Princess Sparkley told me it was the best frosting I'd ever made, so I guess it won some of us over.  :)

Granny B's

These are what started my obsession with sugar cookies.  I got them at a gas station in southern Utah when I was a teenager on a trip to my family's cabin.  I was super excited to see them (from a Utah company) in the bakery section of my local Walmart's bakery section.

Princess Sparkley said these might be the yummiest sugar cookie she's ever had.  But then again, she seems easy to please when it comes to sugar cookies.  We split ours into five since even this one giant cookie's nutritional info said it was two servings.  Although, I'd recommend NOT looking at the nutritional information if you find yourself enjoying one.

Smart Aleck

There are all sorts of things I think about posting that I can't because the it might possibly be in response to stuff people said/did who might possibly be among my blog readership. (None of you who I specifically know read my blog, just people in general who probably know and lurk.)  And nothing mean, just smart alecky stuff I feel like saying every now and then.
In other news, we may stray very far from the norm (OUR norm) when it comes to announcing this baby's name.  Jed wants to broadcast it to the world... like now.  I would still prefer to announce it when we announce he is born.  Otherwise where is the excitement in having a baby.  We know it's a boy.  The name and date of arrival are the only surprises left.

Smoke Detectors

Making the cream topping for this, I left the stove for thirty seconds to come check the recipe on the computer.  Bad idea.  That's when the cream decided to start boiling, boiled all over the burner and filled the kitchen with smoke.  This is apparently the first time I've burnt anything in our new place (that's pretty good, right, no smoke in the kitchen for 7+ months) because I was surprised that no smoke alarm went off.  At our old place, whenever I used my grill pan I set off the smoke detector.  And it was maybe 30 feet away, by the front door.  I went looking for the smoke detector in this new place.  About the same distance, at the top of our stairs, so out of the kitchen and down a hall.  It didn't go off.  It turns out it is the only smoke detector on this floor of the house.  This is a HUGE contrast from the upstairs, where the bedrooms are, that looks like this:

This is extra fun when one of their batteries dies and it starts beeping and I have to drag a chair from smoke alarm to smoke alarm trying to figure out which is the culprit.

Do you set off your smoke alarm often?  In my house growing up, making grilled cheese sandwhiches (or toastites as my mom calls them) in something like this always set off our smoke alarm.

On a related note, anyone have a nice smelling candle they want to bring over?  :)  Or I guess I should just hope that the delicious smell of oven baked peaches and cream french toast overwhelms the smokey smell.
